Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Monument

In partnership with the Riverside Park Conservancy, Neil Berson, W90s Neighborhood Association co-president, is chairing a campaign to restore the Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Monument, a grand and inspirational memorial at Riverside Drive and 89th Street.  This NYC landmark was erected in 1900 and dedicated by then-Governor Theodore Roosevelt to the soldiers and sailors who fought in the Civil War to preserve our Union.  It has since come to have even greater meaning as a memorial to all of the men and women of our armed services who gave the last measure of their devotion to our nation to preserve our freedoms and our democratic ideals and way of life.

Now in a state of disrepair and deterioration, the monument requires restoration at a cost in excess of $30 million.  A fundraising campaign seeking both public and private resources has begun. Berson says, “The restoration of this monument will help to replenish our nation’s soul and celebrate the heroism and sacrifice of our true patriots.  It will also draw attention to our beautiful and historic neighborhood.” Check back here for major developments.
