Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Monument
In partnership with the Riverside Park Conservancy, Neil Berson, W90s Neighborhood Association co-president, is chairing a campaign to restore the Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Monument, a grand and inspirational memorial at Riverside Drive and 89th Street.
Highway of Heroes
The Association will be advocating for New York City to formally designate Riverside Drive from 72nd through 122nd Streets as the “Highway of Heroes,” which has monuments to Eleanor Roosevelt, Soldiers and Sailors, Joan of Arc, the 1956 Hungarian Freedom Fighters (Kossuth), the FDNY’s Firefighters, Samuel Tilden, and Franz Sigel.

315 W 94th Street Update
Representatives of the W90s Neighborhood Association and Riseboro, the operator of the new senior community that soon will begin onboarding 135 senior citizens in the renovated building at 315 West 94th Street between Riverside Drive and West End Avenue, met recently to discuss their plans. In addition to individual one-room apartments with cooking facilities and bathrooms, the building will have a community kitchen and dining room.
The resident seniors will be permanent rent-paying tenants. The residents will be supported by an in-house staff of benefit case managers and other employees, including security personnel and a building manager. There will be one security officer on premises during the daytime and two security officers during the night.
Police Precinct Meeting
Representatives of the Association recently had a productive meeting with Deputy Inspector Naoki Yaguchi, Commander of NYPD’s 24th Precinct to discuss neighborhood issues and concerns. As with the rest of NYC, crime overall has declined, but gun violence, in particular, has increased. Inspector Yaguchi noted that they were focused on the Broadway corridor between 86th and 116th streets and we identified additional locations within our neighborhood that we felt required heightened surveillance and attention. Inspector Yaguchi welcomed ongoing communication with him as needed and provided us with the names and contact information of the community policing officers that cover our area.
